Pelsi had tried one wizard, but I had no way of knowing what the fellowâs specialty had been â or even if heâd been the real thing and not a conniving fraud. Since I had two proven magickers in my employ, I decided to see whether their expertise could do what the otherâs could not.
I checked in with Kemicus before bedtime â heâd discreetly found a berth for himself in a wagon on the far side of the circle, assuming I wanted privacy for my business. As I expected, he answered in the negative: âMy interest has always been in the ways of the winds and the clouds. Iâm afraid I know only the broad categories of magic outside of my own narrow focus. Kua Aiddo would be far more likely to be of help with an affliction of the mind or body.â
So we set out in the morning for Besparartus, striking off in the opposite direction from the caravan shortly after dawn, and taking to the air after weâd passed out of their sight.
From high above the countryside, I pondered the road below and mapped out what I could of Pelsimuthâs itinerary. In the best of possible outcomes, Aiddo would say she thought that she might be able to help Yolo herself, and Kemicus and I would have her back to the caravan before it had even made its next trading stop in Durmialle. A range of other possibilities suggested themselves â as far-fetched as some pilgrimage to Aiddoâs homeland of Hiisia, or as simple as the morg woman having no ideas whatsoever. I disliked any notions that would require me to travel more than two weeks, or that would force me to go searching for specialist healers or wizards. The former case would make it difficult to locate Yolo and Pelsi again, as blood bond would have faded and the caravan had its terminus in Ouberieste â and the latter would necessitate making wide-ranging inquiries with key details of Yoloâs condition. And of course, either one might expose me to scrutiny by Cimonites or by bounty hunters whoâd caught sight of that warrant poster.
The gloomiest of these outcomes chilled me almost as much as the cold, high air upon which we sailed. So I was gladder than glad at the end of the day, when weâd set down outside Besparartus and I found myself again walking up to the Hearty Gloaming.
Inside, a handful of folk sat at tables, nursing drinks or taking their supper. A few looked up as Kemicus and I entered. I could tell at a glance that Aiddo was not among them.
âWren Caydley!â said Lurelle in a friendly voice as the door swung shut behind me. âCome in, take a table. We didnât expect you back so soon. Here, here letâs get you out of that bundle and over by the nice warm fire.â
A bit surprised to see her out of the kitchen at dinnertime, I nonetheless turned and let her help me out of my traveling cloak.
